There is perhaps no part of building a house that is more poorly done then the duct systems that are supposed to deliver clean, conditioned air to each room in the amounts that each room actually needs to remain the same temperature and humidity as the other rooms.
The typical air duct design (almost everyone built today) is a result of pure guess-work. No calculations are for air flow made by anyone. They use rule-of-thumb to guide their decisions. The ducts are always miss-sized for the tonnage they’re serving for the actual needs of each room, and for the type of filter being used. None of the seams and joints are sealed and the duct insulation is installed too tight, erasing much of its R-value.
Even the type of grill used, whether on a floor, wall or ceiling is the wrong type for the application or placed in the worst possible location. They always use the cheapest grill and don’t have a clue as to how to properly supply air into a room. The result is a loud, inefficient, uncomfortable duct system and air flow design that actually dirties the air instead of cleaning it.
No two rooms are the same temperature; the bills are 2-3 times higher than they should be; you have to turn up the T.V when it's operating; and return and supply duct leaks pull in filthy crawl and attic air full of humidity, mold, pollens, fibers and other unhealthy particles and gasses.
At Energy Master Home, Inc. we calculate and design every duct in the house using industry rules (Manual D and J), and then we install them with no leaks and proper insulation. Grills are selected based on need and they are placed to avoid blowing air on people and being covered by furniture and drapes.
Return air supply is designed to truly clean the air and deliver the proper amount of air to the system under the very low resistance the original engineer wanted for the unit to operate properly and efficiently. It is located to be quiet, efficient and to freely receive return air from every room in the zone.
The result is utility bills that are half, or less, then the neighbors with clean, healthy air; quiet operation and even comfort in every single room. Even the bonus room! And the basement!
